A utility infielder during his playing days, Washington coached the Oakland Athletics before being named Texas manager in 2007 and leading the organization for the next eight seasons.
In eight years, he compiled a record of 664 wins and 611 losses. He led the team to the World Series twice, in 2010 and 2011.
He abruptly stepped down during the 2014 season.
At the time, local media accused him of sexual misconduct. Washington held a press conference in response, stating, “I made a mistake, and this is the most embarrassing time of my life to date. I was unfaithful to my wife. I broke my wife’s trust, so I’m standing here to admit my mistake and apologize to her,” he said, admitting to the affair.
Washington has since returned to the field. He was hired as the Oakland Athletics’ infield coach in May 2015, and then became the Atlanta Braves’ coach in 2017.
He is considered one of the best in the league when it comes to teaching infield defense. During his time in Oakland, he developed Marcus Simien into a top-flight infielder. Simien called Washington “the most influential person in my baseball life.” 토토사이트
